Ilimex Flufence: Innovative technology to protect poultry from Avian Influenza.

Our equipment disrupts the virus RNA from avian influenza, damaging it and rendering it harmless. We have developed a prototype that will be installed in a poultry house in Cumbria in late May, where sampling and testing will take place, this is being done in conjunction with Complement Genomics a lab-based company in Durham and Ulster University.

THE PROBLEM

Over 140Mn farmed birds globally have died or been culled because of this avian flu pandemic. Between the UK, EU and US there has been almost 1Bn paid in compensation to farmers due to the avian flu pandemic. This figure doesn’t include the cost of supply chain breakdown, costs to consumers and to businesses that never recovered and the subsequent loss to the exchequer. Failure to find a solution to this problem could result in the destruction of the poultry industry in the UK. Insurance companies have already stated that they will remove insurance cover this November without further disease mitigations.

Avian flu is brought into the UK each year by migrating wildfowl and gulls, which means one of the main vectors of infection transmission to farmed poultry is via airborne pathogens. The Ilimex Flufence solution works by removing 99.9999% of airborne pathogens from the air as they pass into the poultry house. Filter technologies can’t be used in this environment as the dust present would quickly cause them to clog.

OUR SOLUTION

  • Mitigates the risk to poultry flocks from airborne pathogens.
  • It improves the environment in which flocks are reared.
  • It may reduce the risk of a poultry farmer/breeder losing their flock insurance.
  • It may reduce the number of days to changeover a flock.
  • It may increase the flock yield and weight.
  • It will improve profits.
